Tutoring in; music (theory, composition, guitar and piano), and general study

About me

A very warm welcome. I began guitar and piano lessons many years back in my teens. I found it hard to concentrate with all the noise of a class, but flourished in a one to one setting.

I knew early on, that I wanted to one day become a tutor myself.

I have committed the last twenty years of my life to education and performance, working as a tutor in a variety of schools and colleges - teaching an eclectic range of pupils; from special needs students to music scholars to adult beginners - being not from musical parents myself, I am particularly committed to building confidence and skills in pupils whom may not feel they fit the typical mould.

Lessons are relaxed, good humoured, but also highly informative with attention to detail, with each pupil’s specific needs catered for. I am familiar with a range of academic and music exam boards and am experienced in preparing students for exams. However, many pupils also attend lessons with a specific goal/s they wish to achieve.

I am humbled and honoured to be listed as a “distinguished former pupil” of Carlos Bonell, Senior Professor of guitar at The Royal College Of Music.

My Work as a Performer - Composer

Being an active performer and composer means my teaching draws upon my real life experience in music. I have given recitals across Europe and North America and have featured in the magazines Classical Guitar and Fanfare. The latter in a review, writing “a fine composer and guitarist”, while my compositions have been performed at the Adelaide (AUS), Toronto (CAN) and Edinburgh (U.K.) Fringe festivals.

Creative teaching and learning

My aim with all pupils, is to encourage critical thinking, the ability to adapt to a new set of circumstances and to encourage the power of persistence in their learning and work ethic.

Ethics and Integrity

My ethos is is teach students how to think critically for themselves.

Under my tutorage you/your family member, will be taught with no political or religious angle in lessons. Quite simply put; I am there to teach pupils how to think, not what to think. This also applies to musical tastes, and if a piece means something for you, then I am here to help you learn how to play it and/or, learn about it.

Private tuition fees

Prices reflect my qualifications and experience and are currently £21 - £30, per half hour, depending on subject, level and requirements. An initial consultation is recommended, which is free of charge. To book a consultation please contact me on sear1200@gmail.com

I wish you the very best of luck on your learning journey!
